Wittenberg is located on the Elbe River in the Duebener Heath and was first mentioned in a document of 1180. The town was birthplace of the Lutheran Reformation. In 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses opposing the granting of indulgences on the door of Castle Church.
Today, Wittenberg has about 55,000 inhabitants.

After revisiting Erfurt Wittenberg will be the next stop on our tour next spring. Thanks for the tips! There is so much history to see in Wittenberg.
