Mainz by Leipzig
The city of Mainz, was founded by the Romans, is more than two thousand years old and was home to Emperor Friedrich I, also known as Barbarossa. It's situated on the edge of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. West of Mainz starts the forests of the Pfälzer Bergland and the vineyards of the Rheingau. The city of 200,000 has been the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatine since 1950. The historical highlights of the Mainz cityscape include, the old city centre with its Imperial Cathedral and the Gothic St. Stephen's Church.
