Olsztyn, or Allenstein as it is called in German, was founded in 1351. In 1353 the castle was erected on a hill next to the town. Allenstein became famous due to the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus who lived and worked in the city in the years 1516-1521. The town suffered a lot from bombings in World War Two. It passed to Poland in 1945 and its centre was rebuilt to its former charme. |
