The city was founded together with the erection of the monastery in 1190. It became member of the Hanseatic League in 1282 and because of its strategic position between Central Europe and Russia it developed into an important commercial centre. Over the centuries different rulers left their fingerprints in Riga, which can still be seen in its architecture.
After World War I, the independence of Latvia was proclaimed and Riga became capital. The country was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940 and became independent in 1991 with again Riga as capital.

Riga is a jewel of a city! My cousin is there right now and he sounds quite enthusiastic about it. Guess I know why now.

Great tips! I love Riga, been there twice. And yes, the statue in the picture is really for the Bremen Town Musicians.
