Schwerin is situated in the southwestern part of the Federal State Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. With about 110,000 inhabitants it is the second largest city of the state. On an island in Lake Schwerin is idyllically situated the fairytale castle, the landmark of the town.
Schwerin was first mentioned in 1018. After 1358 the city served as the capital of Mecklenburg.

Glad you included a tip on the theatre. A few years ago I saw a great performance there of the opera Salome, by Richard Strauss, on my way back from Wismar. -- Greetings from Frankfurt am Main.

It is the water and the architecture that makes Schwerin a town overlooked by many on the Rhine cruises and Bavarian castle circuit. All the better for us on the Leipzig tour of Germany;-]

Schwerin is indeed a hidden gem. Actually it has become my favorite town in Germany. Beautiful architecture, great atmosphere!!!
