Lagos is a historical coastal town in the Algarve. It was two sailor who made this town popular. Henry the Navigator developed caravels here, built them and sent them out to discover the world. Vasco da Gama started here in 1499 on his historic discovery voyage.
The town was founded by the Romans but was conquered by different armies over the centuries. All of the cultures left parts of their culture in Lagos. It was the capital of the Algarve from 1578 until 1756. |
