"Welcome to OLHAO" Olhão by Leipzig

Olhão Travel Guide: 31 reviews and 150 photos

The town of Olhão with its 30,000 inhabitants is essentially and historically linked to the local fishing industry. Today the most important factory branch is the canning factory for tuna and sardines. Olhão is well known for the 17 local fishermen who crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1808 in the fishing boat ?Bom Sucesso? without a map to announce their exiled King, Dom João IV, that the French invading armies had been defeated and that it was for the King to return to Portugal.

Thank's for the interesting history about Olhão! Very important to tell. On the other you also tell the rainy season is between September and May, which is not at all correct. It can rain between November and February, that´s it, mostly in January. Last winter it hardly rained at all, which of course means it gets too dry. At "Carneval" which normally is the third week in February summer is ususally back. I have also spent Christmas with 20 degrees and sunshine. Algarve is the sunniest place within Europe. Lisbon is statistically the warmest capital of Europe.
    Algarve is really worth it.
