Silves was founded by the Romans about 1000 BC. The Moors conquered the town and built huge places, wide streets and it became the cultural centre of the Iberian Peninsula. The importance of Silves continued under the control of the Portuguese kings. A destructive earthquake in 1755 destroyed most of the town. But the remains of the Moorish castle are still present. |
