Latvia is situated on the eastern Baltic coast and borders Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and Russia. My friend and I travelled from Lithuanian border near Saldus via Riga to Ainazi where we stayed one night in a motel.
It was not easy to get here. In Lithuania we could not find the right road due to heavy rain so we tried another one which headed north. After 30km the road suddenly ended in a field. Although we had a road map we could not find the right way. It took us 3 hours to find a major route with a border checkpoint. In Latvia we did not have much trouble with roads but with money. We arrived in Saldus, a small town a few kilometers north of the border. There we did not find an open bank so we had to use a cash automat. The lowest amount we could get was 250 Euros (300 US$). We didn't know what to do with all that money. In the end we exchanged the rest of the money in Estonia. |
