Saxony is an old and traditional state in the southeast of Germany. In the north you find the town of Leipzig with its fascinating history. Music, art and architecture combined with Saxon flair make Leipzig with its lovely old Renaissance and Baroque buildings unique. In the east the Saechsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland), a national park with its sandstone mountains is attracting many visitors. Explore Saxony along river Elbe via ship. Enjoy the fantastic natural landscapes abundant with castles and vineyards and stop to see some of the most famous cities like Torgau, Dresden and of course pottery town Meissen with the oldest china manufacture in Europe. The most famous building in the city of Dresden is the restored Zwinger Palace, which contains many old masters in its picture gallery. The Erzgebirge (Ore Mountain) region near Dresden lies on the border with the Czech Republic. Its mountainous wooded landscape makes it ideal for walkers in the summer and skiers in the winter.
Chemnitz is the biggest town in this region. Other towns like Freiberg, Kuchwald, and Seifen give tourist an insight to Saxon craft and architecture. Zwickau in the southwest was birthplace of Robert Schumann and attract with a beautiful center.
