Bavaria is the biggest German state with Munich as capital. In the north is Franconia. Main city there is Nuremberg, well known for its gingerbread and the Christkindlmarkt (Xmas-market). Nuremberg’s landmark is the Kaiserburg Imperial Castle. Also worth to visit are the churches of St. Lawrence and St. Sebald, Dürer's House, Museum of Toys, German Railway Museum and the Town Hall. North of Nuremberg is Bamberg, an old imperial town that attracts with the Imperial Cathedral and Michaelsberg Monastery. East of Bamberg near the Fichtel Mountains is Bayreuth and its famous Wagner Opera Festival, which takes place every year from late July to August. To the east of Bavaria, bordering the Czech Republic is the Bavarian Forest which is an ideal region for relaxing and hiking. The very south of Bavaria is called Upper Bavaria. This region is the most visited in Germany and has the best-known places including Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berchtesgaden, and Füssen with the fairytale building Neuschwanstein Castle. The western part of Bavaria is Swabia and the Allgäu. Augsburg, northwest of Munich was founded by the Romans and was home of the Fuggers, a famous medieval aristocratic family and great patrons of the arts. Don’t miss to visit the Cathedral, St Anna's Church and Mozart's House. |
