Saxony-Anhalt was found in 1947, divided into two parts in 1952, and reunited in 1990. Not old on maps but its tradition dates back to 10th century. Martin Luther's Birthplace at Eisleben, the Old Town of Quedlinberg, the Castle at Wittenberg, and Dessau's Bauhaus are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The whole north of Saxony-Anhalt is flat as a mirror with forests and crop fields. There you find the capital Magdeburg on the banks of the Elbe with a gothic cathedral surrounded by baroque buildings. Southwest of Magdeburg, on Saxony-Anhalt's western border you find the Harz Mountains region, a region ideal for walking and winter sports holidays. The highest point of the Harz is the Brocken (1142m - 3747ft). On a clear day you can view a distance of about 150 km (93 mi). South of the Brocken there is Wernigerode with its 16th-century Town Hall and Quedlinburg's and Stolberg's 16th-century half-timbered houses. In the east of Saxony-Anhalt lies Dessau with its Bauhaus Architectural School and Wittenberg where Martin Luther nailed his "95 Theses Against Indulgences" to the door of the castle church in 1517. Just to the south lies the city of Halle, birthplace of Haendel, and where Martin Luther often preached in the Marienkirche in the Market Square. |
