Hesse is Germany’s richest state situated in the centre of the country. Lakes, forests and mountains dominate the northern part of the state. Here you also find health resorts and many rural villages with half-timbered houses. The main city here is Kassel, home of the Grimm Brothers Museum and the Wilhelmshöhe Palace. In the centre lies the Vogelsberg, an extinct volcano. In the far south of Hesse is the Odenwald, a region rich in legend and folklore and excellent for hiking. In the south is also the major financial and commercial centre of Germany, Frankfurt. Its impressive skyline has led to its nickname of ‘Mainhattan’. Much of the city suffered destruction in 1944, and so Frankfurt is now a quite modern metropolis. In the old town centre buildings, including the Römer and the town hall remember the time before World War Two. Darmstadt, just a few kilometres south of Frankfurt attracts with its 16th-century castle and the 18th-century Palace. Wiesbaden is the capital of the state of Hesse. It is an international spa and congress centre in the Taunus and on the Rhine. |
