  • The Weighing Station was constructed in 1534 as a weighing and storage house. The building was destroyed during the bombings of 1944 and rebuilt to its old glamour in 1994. It is presently used by the Volkshochschule (adult education school).
    In the background you see the Church of St. Andrew.

  • Church of St. Andrew was built around 1225/30 and towers above the city at 93 m. Todays facade was made in 14th century in Gothic style. It has always been the highest church in Braunschweig.

  • The City Hall was built between 1893 and 1900 in the Neo-Gothic style. The 61m tower was designed according to Flemish models.

  • Well, this huge building is located next to the town hall. It is made in the same style so I think it belongs to the town hall. If I'm wrong and you know more about it please let me know.

  • At the northern side of the Burgplatz is located the Guild House. It was built in 1901 with original components of a house of 1530. The Guild House has always been the seat of the Craftsman's Association.

  • The State Museum at Burgplatz was erected between 1800 and 1804. It was once used as Publishing House of the "Vieweg Verlag".

    Things To Do: Cathedral of St. Blasius

  • The Cathedral St. Blasius was erected by Henry the Lion between 1173-1195. Henry the Lion chose was buried there in 1195 next to his wife Mathilde.

    You can visit the crypta of the cathedral for just one Euro. The admission for the cathedral itself is free.

  • Dankwarderode Castle was once built in 1175 and was the residence of Henry the Lion. The original building was destroyed in a fire. In 1887 it was rebuilt based on the ground plan of the hall building.

  • The Old City Market has been a location for trade and fairs for 700 years. It was planned in the 12th century. In it's middle is the Late-Gothic Fountain of the Virgin Mary, which is decorated with motifs from the bible.

  • The Old City Hall is presently used by the city for exhibition and represention purposes. Most figures on pillars were created in the 15th century.
