Concentration Camp - Dachau
Concentration Camp

I was in Dachau during my military service. We were brought here with the intension to show us what wrong power can do and that we shouldn't obey orders against the Grundgesetz (German Constitution).

The camp was erected in 1933 to arrest political prisoners, particularly communists. Later also Jews, Gypsy, homeless people, homosexuals and others were arrested here.
Of the more than 200,000 prisoners who passed through the concentration camp until 1945, 32 000 died officially. However, the actual number of victims is much higher.

Today the camp is a museum. Open daily from 9am to 5pm (Monday closed). Admission is free.

Town Hall

The town hall is located just opposite of the Church St. Jakob. It was built in 1486 and pulled down almost five hundred years later. In 1934 architects rebuilt the town hall with the facade in the style it had in the early 17th century. Fifty years later it was enlarged by a modern part. The building received an award by the Association of German Architects.

Castle Garden - Dachau

Castle Garden

Castle Garden

Okay, I must admit that this photo does not show a beautiful castle garden. I was here in March and only a few snowdrop flowers were blossoming.

From the castle garden you have a breathtaking panoramic view towards Munich. It was too misty to see the city during my stay here.

Dachau Castle

Dachau Castle

Dachau Castle was built between 1546-1573 on the ruins of the old 14th-century fortress. It was built in Renaissance style near the centre of Dachau on an 500 meter high hill. From here you have an excellent view over the town and can see Munich on a clear and sunny day.

The interior was designed by the Royal builder Friedrich Sustris. You find several figures on the pillars and a golden altar.
On the southern side of the church is a beautiful sun dial. It was painted in 18th century and shows time, the day and the month as well as the zodiac.

The church can be visited daily except during mass.
