Regierungspräsidium

The governmental presidium is situated at Luisenplatz. It was build in 18th century as lecture hall.

Old City Hall

The Old City Hall, built in 1598, stands on the south side of the Market Square. At the groundfloor level in the Ratskeller locally brewed beer can be enjoyed.

Marstall

Next to the Marstall are the "Lange Bäuchen", stables for horses of the landgrave Ernst Ludwig (1678-1739).

Marstall and "Lange Bäuchen" had been destroyed in 1944 and were rebuilt with an enlarging by one more floor.

Marstall

The Baroque Marstall was apparently built by Erich Philipp von Plönnies in 1725. The Marstall contained stables for horses in the ground floor and apartments in the first floor.

Old Theatre

This Calssicistic building was once errected as "the big house" by the architect Georg Moller in 1819. Before the end of World War Two it housed the theatre of Darmstadt. Today the building is used by the Hessian Public Record Office.

The White Tower

The tower was erected in 14th century and was part of the city fortification. He became heightened in 18th century. In 1944 the tower had been completely destroyed and was rebuilt of its own fragments and broken material.

The Lion of Darmstadt

Since 1808 the coat of arms of Darmstadt has been the lion with the sword.

Hessian State Museum

The collection of the museum dates back to the time of the landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt, especially of Ludewig I (1780-1830). In the muesum you find exhibitions about the ancient times as well as of paintings, instruments and glass art.
