Darmstadt is situated in the very south of Hesse, founded in the 11th century. Darmstadt received its municipal charter in 1330 and became an university town in 1836. The city suffered from Allied air raids during World War II. Some old building were rebuild and today the centre attracts with narrow streets, a 16th-century Town Hall and the Jugendstil (art nouveau) artists' colony, founded at the turn of the 20th century. |
