Florence of the North is the description of Saxony’s capital and, in my eyes, of one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. The city was first mentioned in 1206 is has always been a flourishing metropolis of culture, education and economy. Situated on the banks of the Elbe River is has been an important hub of commerce. The city experienced its Golden Age in the 18th century under the rule of Augustus the Strong. In this time the alchemist John Friedrich Böttcher (not an ancestor of me) invented the porcelain as the first on the European continent. In 19th century Dresden was an innovative economic and cultural location and one of the richest cities in Germany. Almost completely destroyed on February 13th, 1945 by Allied air raids, it has been reconstructed to what it was with a touch of socialistic architecture.
The Sächsische Staatskapelle (Saxon State Orchestra), founded in 1548, and the Philharmonic, founded in 1870 possess an extraordinary history and tradition amongst the greatest orchestras of Europe. Richard Wagner lead the first performances of "Rienzi," "The Flying Dutchman" and "Tannhäuser" in the Semper Opera House. Later nine operas by Richard Strauss were also performed here. Also the famous Kreuzchor, a boy’s choir, has its origins in Dresden.
Today, Dresden has grown to a town of about 490,000 inhabitants and offers visitors a unique blend of stunning architecture and world-famous art collections. The economic life of Dresden is also flourishing again; especially the tourism and the high tech branch. I used to live here in 2005, a 15-min-walk away from the Frauenkirche and a 10-min-walk to the nightlife district "Äußere Neustadt". I got a lot of friends here and visit the city frequently. So check this page every now and then and see new tips. |
