Lower Saxony is the second largest state of Germany. The North Sea coast of Lower Saxony consists of sandy beaches with health resorts and modern spas. The East Friesian Islands are a popular place for summer holidays. Further inland are swamps, moors and birch forests. Oldenburg is the economic and cultural centre in this region. The east of the state is well known for the Fairy-Tale-Road, which starts in Bremen and goes to Hameln. The Weserbergland attracts with numerous hill ranges and deep forests. In the east of the state is Wolfsburg, home of Volkswagen cars. In the city you find the Autostadt (Car City), a visitor attraction dedicated to cars. The state capital Hannover hosts the renowned Trade Fair and was host of the EXPO 2000. Not far away from Hannover you can find some well-restored old towns, like Celle and Braunschweig with half-timbered buildings and Baroque castles. |
