Basel: contentment, community & the Rhine River

Basel Banhoff
Basel has got to be one of the best cities in the world to truely enjoy yourself . It offers clean air, privacy, peace, and at the same time it is offers "good clean fun." People here love the Rhine River and they make use of it in everyway.

A woman in a jacket was walking her bike along the Rhein as a man finished swimming, got out of the Rhine River and put a towel around himself (it was September 29, 2004).

You can read a book, have a discussion, meet new friends, walk without worry, or swim, eat, row or skate yourself until you drop. This place does grow on you, and I am now a fan of Basel, too!

Basel, the oldest university town in Switzerland, is a markedly open city. It stands at the point where Switzerland, Germany and France meet. These multiple facets influence the artistic and cultural life of the place.

Apart from its contrasting architectural styles, it has over 30 museums and galleries as well as many small theatres - besides the City Theatre with its repertoire of operas, operettas and plays - and the first Musical Theatre in Switzerland, all waiting to be visited.

The new art and cultural scene is nothing like the traditional version. For example, many industrial buildings have been converted and now serve as the setting for concerts and club evenings.

The possibilities of Basel are unlimited and its borders are always open for a quick trip into neighbouring France or Germany.

5 good reasons to visit Basel:

* Attractive location on the Swiss-French-German border.

* The Old Town with the Town Hall, Market Place and Cathedral is one of the best maintained and finest in Europe.

* See the biggest of Swiss zoos - an oasis in the heart of town.

* A market and trade-fair town.

* All manner of art, culture and architecture to see.

-Clean air, peace, privacy and lovely daily walks by the Rhine River.
Basel Town Hall

Basel loves the Rhine

People often jump into the river and drift for awhile and then return to do it again. They take off their street clothes and place them in a special waterproof bag and float with it down the river wearing plastice thongs.

After that, they often walk to the Town Hall shown in the photo as the market is across the street.

Beer, sausage & grill

In the town, they put out lots of tables for people to come outside and sit and be with each other to celebrate anything and everything. They eat sausage, bread, mustard and drink beer.
