HOW CAN ONE DESCRIBE IZBORSK?

It is a small village/group of villages/town (there?s no single view of on the subject) located in the Pechora area of the Pskovskaja Oblast?:

- in 30 km from the regional center - Pskov,
- in 850 km from the Russian capital Moscow and
-in 300 km from Saint Petersburg.

WHAT DO LOCALS THINK OF IT?

For anyone who has visited these places, it is not simply a name of a spot on the map. Izborsk is much more than that, something which is yet to be solved.

Izborsk is a rare connection of the best things a human soul has with the nature. The sky, water and the ground, flora, the man, his ideas and creations are merged here in a single whole.

Ancient Truvor?s Settlement and the stone fortress built in XIV century on mountain Zheravjej, - are two vivid examples of the skill of the people here to blend their creations with nature and environment. The stone fortress looks as if it "grows" from a hill on which it?s located. Natural beauty of the Izborsko-Mal?skaya valley are organically supplemented with various man-made creations - ensemble of Malsky monastery, numerous chapels, the already mentioned ancient Truvor?s Settlement with the big memorable cross.

It is a place where Russian history began, where are culture and style first met those of other people, a place where these cultures and customs and beliefs are blended till these days.

Izborsk is a northwestern gate into Russia, the keeper of secrets of the country?s history, city of keys, stone city on the Bird's mountain. For centuries and years in these places artists and writers found a source of inspiration. Izborsk?s past and its present are studied by archeologists, ecologists, ethnographers and linguists and specialists in folklore. (Given from the brochure of the local tourist office with some linguistic corrections by me, else we?d get more material for travel humor.)

WHAT DO I MYSELF THINK OF IT?

Well, Izborsk is one of the best memories I have of my childhood travels. It?s also a place where monuments of all ages come together and create an extraordinary place to discover Russia. Besides, it?s quite hassle-free and not that touristy. So quiet and calm (essential to discover such a place) are guaranteed!

Izborsk also has one of the few real (in Western European sense) fortresses in Russia ? a must for any history lover! The town provides something for a mystery freak ? go and search for the Truvor?s Cross.

The only drawback ? the weather. It can be cold and windy virtually on any day in summer and bitterly cold in winter. But worth it, people!
