For me, Antarctica or "the ice" as it is called locally, has been one of my favorite destinations. However, just to visit. Maybe because the scenery is the beautiful. Perhaps because it has been nearly untouched by man. Maybe because hardly anyone has ever been there.
I spent a week at McMurdo Station (or MacTown as the locals call it). McMurdo Station (US) is the largest station on the ice and is run by the National Science Foundation. The Coast Guard has an icebreaker and the Navy have some pilots posted here too.
There are about 900 people that spent the summer in McMurdo, from November to April. Only about 150-200 people winter over.
