Prague is the captial of the Czech Republic. It's an amazing city, because it incorporates a combination of new age technology and old world beauty. The architecture survived unscathed during World War II.
This is my second trip here, the first being in July 2001. It's fun to come back to cities that you've been to. I speak some Czech so it's fun to actually be able to use it!
I experienced more of the excellent nightlife last time, but saw more of the sights this time. |
| | A Long History Prague is also the center of the province known as Bohemia. The Kingdom of the Bohemia was independent until it was eventually taken over by the Austria-Hungary empire in the 17th century.
The King of Bohemia was one of the electors to the Holy Roman Empire and it remained that was until the Empire was dissolved in 1806.
Czechoslovakia became independent in 1918 following WWI. It was a thriving country and one of the best economies in Europe until Hitler marched in 1938. After regaining independence in 1945, democratic leaders of Ceskoslovenko (its Czech name) were killed off until the commies took over in 1948. Attempts are reform in 1968, known as Prague Spring, were met by Soviet tanks crushing civilians. The "Velvet Revolution"of 1989 ended communism. Czech and Slovak peacefully split in 1993. |
