Tuesday ~ July 16, 2002 | View from Sandi Peak Tram parking lot |
I started my Southwest vacation by flying into Albuquerque on Tuesday night, July 9th. As I didn't arrive until 10:30 pm at night, by the time I got my luggage and took the shuttle bus over to my hotel...it was too late to do any sightseeing. The night was nice though....when I left PA, it was hot & humid. Albuquerque was blessedly free of humidity...could've sat outside all night!! LOL Got a good night's sleep..then got up early the next morning to pick up my car rental, then I hit I-40 heading west towards Gallup.
After working my way up through Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming...and then back down again through the Rockies into Espanola & Santa Fe........I ended up back where it all began....Albuquerque!
Tuesday, late afternoon, I took the Sandia Peak tram, which has an awesome view overlooking the city. The temperature up on top of the mountain was 42 degrees....quite a change after temp's up in the 100s! It was refreshing! I stayed Tuesday night just outside of Albuquerque in Rio Rancho, then got up the next morning and did a little bit of sightseeing around Albuquerque.
Went shopping at Skip Maisles downtown, which btw has great prices for Native American arts & crafts. After shopping I headed over to Historic Old Town, and browsed around the various shops & stores. Took photos of San Felipe de Neri church, and headed over to Church Street Cafe to eat. After lunch I stopped briefly at the Pueblo Cultural Center. Then it was time to head for the airport & drop off the rental car.
Albuquerque is a very nice town...lots to see and do. One of the nicest things about it is the fact that there are no skyscrapers blocking your view of the surrounding mountains & scenic views....you can see forever it seems. Also, town is easy for driving around in. My only regret?? That I didn't allow more time for being in Albuquerque....but.....that just means I'll have to return someday! *grin*
