One hundred and forty-three years have passed since Yokohama opened its port to the world after 250 years of isolation. From a mere fishing village of 600 inhabitants into a leading cosmopolitan port city with nearly 3.5 million people.

Yokohama is home to more than 100,000 businesses. The second most populated city in Japan after Tokyo. Modern skyscrapers rise out of the Minato Mirai 21 waterfront area including a yacht sail-like building gleaming white against the blue sea and skies.

Yokohama has a Chinatown that dates back more than 140 years, when Chinese working at the port settled into the neighboring streets. Hamakkos (native Yokohama-ite) are equally open-minded, welcoming goods, people and information from elsewhere and digesting them all to create a new and original culture.
