Things To Do: The Alpines wooden bridge (The Old Bridge)

The symbol of the town and its countryside. No other words to describe it. Many things to say about, by the way. This "old bridge" (this is the name the Bassano people use the most) was destroyed (and built again) at least 8 times in 6 centuries, from wars or Brenta's flooding... Only once they built it not using wood... but the bridge of stone (1524) kept only for 2 years, and this "modern" thing was set aside :) The actual bridge is set on the Palladio's view (the same architect of the Rotonda in Vicenza and many houses on the Brenta) of the 1569...

Directions: Not difficult to move into Bassano, the centre is small and the bridge is not far from it...

Things To Do: View from the Old Bridge

In this zone in 1915-18 there was lot of movement. In fact, this was a border zone between Austrian-Hungarian Empire and Italy and there were many battles.
In that time, a song of Alpines said "Sul ponte di Bassano/noi ci darem la mano" (On the bridge of Bassano/we will give our hands) and since then the Old Bridge was called "Alpines Bridge". Sometimes it happens to meet old people with a pen on their green hat. They're alpins :)
Also a famous artists family born near here. In fact, Jacopo Bassano was from this zone and in his honor (but the "Bassano" artists were 3) he was called Jacopo Da Ponte. (Da Ponte=from the bridge)

Things To Do: Itinerary for the town centre

I suggest this itinerary: start from Viale dei Martiri incoming from the "Santa Maria delle Grazie" ancient door, go straight to the Dome (and the Superior Castle), after take direction to the Old Bridge and have a pause in "Nardini's" inn. After that, look for the ceramic shops in Ferracina's street and go to the three squares (Piazzotto Montevecchio, Piazza Libertà and Piazza Garibaldi). At the end visit the Museum here, expecially in this time (there is an important exhibition about Antonio Canova).

Things To Do: Porta delle Grazie and "The General"

This is the ancient entrance to the city... it is possible to pass into it with the car, even if most of the hystorical centre (in night there are more renstrictions) is not allowed. On the left you see a monument of General Cadorna (an alpin hero of the First WW), looking to the Monte Grappa. A phrase tell "Monte Grappa tu sei la mia Patria" (Monte Grappa you are my Country).

Famous for the panorama and - sad to say - for a fact happened in the Second World War. The 31th march 1944 Nazists killed here 31 partisans hanging them with the trees of this way.

This is one of the trees in Viale dei Martiri, with the name of the hanged partisan in 1944. Bassano has two golden medals for the Resistance.
Behind it, the beatiful panorama with the Monte Grappa, the Altopiano dei 7 comuni (Asiago and neighboords cities) and the Valley of the Brenta river.

Beautiful church, the Dome contains some paintings, nothing so important. It is picturesque the Castle of Ezzelini which contains the old Dome.
The bell-tower was originally a castellan tower to the defence of the city.

This small square is actually in repairing, but it quite finished. It's a beautiful square with some ancient buildings, in particular the house Michieli-Bonato. If I'm not in mistake (I will check next time), you can not visit inside it :/

Was lucky enough to visit in 2004, got some good pics of the alpines bridge. Didn't really have long enough there to explore all of the town. Will get back there again some time |
