Oh yes, gondola is one of the most tourist traps you can find in Venice. A tour in gondola is probably a must, but you have to know that there are fixed prices for standard tours in Venice, and sometimes it happens that people could ask you more (tourists... so...)

At Least Do This: Click here to know the official gondola tours prices... these prices are for standard tour, which are in the url site, so it's normal that a "gondoliere" asks you more if you ask for an alternative tour... but pay attention :)
Alternative: A gondola is so expensive, right, but the only thing I suggest to really do is a tour by vaporetto in Canal Grande (take line 1).. it's very cheaper and even if less romantic, you will love that tour, expecially in a sunny day, I'm sure for this.

Venice is a peaceful city, crime is not a problem. But Venice is a city who has a lot of tourism, and as you could imagine, lot of tourists attract lot of swindlers. One of the most problems of Venice, for tourists, is that it's very simple to lose into it. Well, that is not so a big problem, in fact Venice is not so big so in one day, maximum two, you could find your street again (LOL!). It is simple to find people who could help you in finding hotels and streets, but ask before if they wont money for that.. surely you will find people who can help you for free (me too, if i am not busy)... follow them! There is always a Venetian ready to help you :)

Alternative: Look in the sky and search for the Campanile of Saint Mark... in the pic you can see how it is so you can't miss it, now! Eheheheh :)

Another thing you must pay attention is restaurants touristic menu. Venice is a expensive city, so be quiet when you read menu very cheap.

Alternative: Ask ALWAYS if drinks and seats are included, how much cost desserts and cakes... you could be surprised that you could spend more and more you read before on the menu!

Pay attention! Your hotel could be up to a cleening set and it couldn't smell like roses... :)
