What to say? It's one of the most known squares of the world. The church, the Palazzo Ducale, the bell-tower, the pigeons, the Florian bar, the great square, gondolas, the romantic view... it's all here! I love this place, at the same time it is sad and cheerful... sometimes, expecially in october, high water is the joy for the tourists (less for venetian people, I assure! eheh)... A tourist in Venice can't miss it, it's the really heart of the city!

San Marco's Basilica is probably the most important monument in Venice. The story of this church starts before its construction, in 829, when the body of St. Mark was stolen from Alexandria (Egypt) to Venice. Three years later there was the consecration of the first church of Saint Mark. But it is only in 1063 - under the Doge Contarini - that this church (as we know it) was built. From 1071 to 1084 there was the great mosaic decoration. (The story of this building is too long for a VT page).
Inside it there are mosaics and statues very important, lot of them stolen from Costantinopoli (as the Golden Pala). In 1807 - ten years after the fall of the Venetian Republic - this Basilica became the see of the Patriarch of Venice, until then at San Pietro a Castello.

The highest (98,60 metres) and most famous campanile in Venice. After the fall in 1902, it was built again in the same way. This campanile is a good occasion to see Venice from above. The view is amazing.
Open everyday from 8.30 to 19.30.

Built around 810 under the doge Angelo Partecipazio's age. Originally named "Palatium duci", in italian Palazzo Ducale. The original model seems to be the Diocletian Palace in Split even if it is the palace since IX century has totally changed aspect.
After the fall of the Venetian Republic (1797), the Palace was used by French domination before and Austrian domination after in more ways. In 1866 Venice was connected to the Italy and in 1923 the Italy reign, owner of the Palace, gave the administration to the Venice municipality. Since there, it's a museum.

The Rialto Bridge (don't forget, the correct pronunciation is "Ree-alto") is the first bridge built on Grand Canal in Venice... Actually, there are three big points on water (Rialto, Accademia, Scalzi) and another one (Calatrava, from the spanish architect owner of the project) is building... Of course the most famous is Rialto, for its great position, for its shops (expecially about jewellery) in it, one of the most important monuments of Venice. This alternative view is taken from Corte Remer.

The bridge of Rialto is long 48 metres and high to the water about 7,5 m. Do you know that this is the most narrow point of the Grand Canal? If you want to see how is the Grand Canal with the snow, look my travelogue about Snow in Venice.

Lot of canals are great subject for your pics... not only the Canal Grande. Colors are great enough. Here a romantic view about a canal in Santa Croce's zone.
