Hanging out with the locals

Easter Island, a magical place

I have always been fascinated by Easter Island, but never imagined getting that chance to actually visit myself. People say it is the most isolated society on Earth. I don't know if this actually is true, but it is certain that Easter Island is indeed far from everything. Easter Island lies 2300 miles west of the Chilean coast, and the only flights going there are with LanChile.

Easter Island is of course famous for its giant statues known as "Moai", and it is for this reason that I was so fascinated about the island. however, after having been there, my most lasting impression is of the people of the island. They were so pleasant, so nice, so friendly--how refreshing that was.

Statues of mystery--the Moai

Who built them, why were they carved, how were they transported...these and many other questions surround the topic of the famous "Moai" statues. Going to Easter Island and seeing these statues for yourself is like stepping into a program of the Discovery Channel and being a part of it. They made a big impression on me.
A place to ponder

Mor than just Moai statues

For me, now, Easter Island means so much more than just an island of mysterious statues. Wild scenery, beautiful landscapes, pounding waves, beautiful people--all this and more, and you can reflect upon all of this on one of the island's few secluded beaches and just sit in wonder, and awe....

Pros:"Going there is an experience you will never forget."
Cons:"The island's isolation."
In A Nutshell:"Magical, mysterious, and wonderful, all at the same time."

The airport is very very small indeed, but the actual runway is one of the largest in the Pacific, and is actually approved by the NASA for the space shuttle emergency landings.

Very helpful tips, Wade. It's surprising to read "Going to Mass" as a VT tip but it sounds great - we'll have to remember it when we visit in February.
