City Scene: Admire the babes!

  • Browsing through some Philippine VT pages, I noticed that women NOT typical of the ordinary Pinay or Filipina are presented as enticements for the male traveler to visit the Philippines. I propose to show what the typical Pinay really is - not just a pretty face, but a woman of substance equal or maybe even better than her counterparts elsewhere. I renamed my Babes of Manila travelogue to "Babes of the Philippines" because they are not just here in Manila, they're everywhere! The typical "babe" I know is beautiful, brainy, a fine friend, a loyal partner, a great mom or an exciting single (well, the moms are equally exciting), independent, fun, a lot of other superlatives that escapes me at the moment, and most definitely not the cheap variety depicted by others.

Check out the Babes of the Philippines travelogue for yourself, and see the difference. I'm proud to know these ladies.

    Luneta: Go to Luneta
  • Tip Rating:
  • Watch the changing of the guards at the Rizal monument. Not quite Buckingham, but if you are into people watching, you'll have a field day. Luneta is Everyman's Park. Towards sunset is the best time to go.

    Luneta: Take a Luneta Picture
  • Tip Rating:
  • Syl and I got into a contest of who can get the flag pole AND the Rizal monument in the same frame. Guess who won? :o)

    Luneta: Ride a Calesa
  • Tip Rating:
  • The calesa or horse drawn carriage is fast disappearing from the streets of Manila. It used to be king of the road, but is often relagated to side streets these days. You'll have to haggle, especially if you look foreign. $2 should get you a 15 minutes ride anywhere.

Directions: Most of the calesas can be found in Manila's Chinatown District. A few, like this one, can be found trying to pick up fares in Luneta.

  • I've seen a calesa stand on its rear end once because of overloading. This one doesn't come close to that.

    Intramuros: Visit San Agustin Church
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Agustin inside the walls of Intramuros is the oldest church in the Philippines. Built in the 1600s, it has survived earthquakes, wars, and typhoons - with some renovation works of course.

It only has been a few days but from my first impressions in the Philippines I VERY much agree with what you say. Somewhere around here I read even the most dedicated bachelor may change his mind here, I have the feeling it also could happen to me.
