Ethiopia

by kiwiwahine - last update: Sep 8, 2002

Crossing from Sudan was a breeze although the transportation was a bit dusty and hard on the butt. We organised transport at the local market in Gedaref and proceeded to cross on the back of a truck full of onions. The trip included an overnight stop before hitting Metema and Ben, Mike and I spent the night sleeping at the Immigration compound on the hill. Reboarded our truck the next morning. Immigration into Ethiopia is smooth and painless although it can be difficult to locate the Immigration office for Ethiopia, which is hidden behind some huts on the right hand side of the road. We had a couple of hours to kill so spent the late morning and early afternoon getting reacquainted with beer before boarding a truck to Shihade where we overnighted in a brothel/bar/hotel before catching a bus to Gondar the next day. From Gondar it was off to Bahar Dar where we finally caught up with the big yellow truck although we opted not to reboard, instead grabbing more cash from the safe a change of clothes and waving goodbye to the truck until Addis Ababa.
We spent more time in Ethiopia then planned when the truck had mechanical difficulties and we were forced to wait it out in Addis. 16 days in Addis in all. Some opted to head off alone while we decided to sit it out, short on funds and enjoying discounted room rates we soaked up the luxuary of an ensuite bathroom and beer on tap.
