Oostvaardersplassen In the middle of the southern part of the Flevoland province is a protected area (kind of national park) called Oostvaardersplassen. It is situated between the cities of Almere and Lelystad. Here at the Oostvaardersplassen a lot of wild life can be found. From deers, foxes and others to a wide variety of birds. Many birds from the north of Europe stay here during the winter time, others, living here during the summer fly southwards. Years ago, Scottish Highlanders where brought to this area, they are now fully self supported. These very strong animals can survive all kind of weather in this area without problems. The area is not only covered by rush, but naturally it has also a lot of lakes. The water kept standing here during the drying of the polders. Not all the water was pumped out. This was the time this area was established. Birds found a natural home here. Deers came later, swimming over the lakes between the so called old land and new land. They found a new home here too.
The Oostvaardersplassen is a unique ecosystem, which developed by accident. These days it is a paradise for bird watchers and lovers of nature.
The birds in the area, which include spoonbills can be admired from the observation huts in the reed lands, swamps and many pools. Game, Koniks horses, Heck cattle and red deer, roam around in this vast nature reserve and are a sight for sore eyes. Every small, seasonal change in the flora and fauna can be observed. Various excursions are offered. The thousands of birds which visit the Oostvaardersplassen each year and the mating sounds of the red deer in fall are unparalleled attractions. Get away from it all for a while and let the splendid nature of the Oostvaarderplassen surprise you. |
