I arrived in Singapore in February 2002 as the first stop on a Round the World trip. It was an ideal introduction to Asia for someone who had never visited the continent before. It is modern, safe, clean and pretty but it always essentially Asian. You could never mistake it for Europe. 4 days was enough to get used to the time difference from Europe, to see the essential sights and get a good feel for what life might be like for the locals.
