1998 was my first trip to Beijing - it was an eye opener to me - going to China as an Overseas Chinese.
But my husband has been to China many times when it was closed to the world as tourist - he was there invited by government officials.

We went there in 1998 part of a tour - mainly because I cannot read nor speak Mandarin. I dread organised tour as it meant rushing around from one city to another, really early morning calls, bad food (food just to eat to keep you going and really - it is really bad food but we compensated it by extending the trip on our own and going to better reknown restaurants).

There is a lot to do in Beijing - you need many days to cover it thouroughly - i do suggest going to all the main tourist attraction but taking your time - meaning spending at least a day on each of them so that you can appreciate them.
