The King's Castle ~ Schloss Neuschwanstein

by Audrey118 - last update: Aug 25, 2003

Fantasy Come true!!!

Schloss Neuschwanstein
Not to be missed if you are in Germany...this is the castle built by King Ludwig - but he hardly ever had a chance to stay there ....a mere 172 days only!!!

The king in his young days lead an isolated life from the world - the company of his brother Otto and their tutors. The strange upbringing led him to a self created imaginary world - a world dominated by the swan knight.

In his early teens, King Ludwig saw his first opera - Wagner's Lohengrin which later drove the King's fantasied imagination further!

6 years after he ascended to throne, he started construction of the Neuschwanstein which means New Swan Castle

King Ludwig once wrote to Richard Wagner... 'when we two are long dead, our works will still be a shining example to distant posterity....'

True enough 6 weeks after the death of the obsessed King Ludwig, the castle was declared as a museum and for the first time the general public could see the eccentricness of their deposed king!
The lunacy of the king can be seen in his obsession came true - and the most unique thing is despite the awesomeness of the castle, there is only one bedroom!!! and there are lots of swans depiction throughout the castle - after it is rightful name of the caslte....swan's castle

The picture is taken from atop the Mariebruecke (mary's bridge - named after the king's mother).

Souvenier Booklet

I bought this little booklet - you can get them from the kiosk in the castle, or even in the many souvernier shops at the foothill.
It has lots of history and wonderful pictures inside of the castle....

The book comes in various languages...
Souvenier Book cover
There is guided tours which take about 35 minutes BUT i do highly recommend getting this souvenier booklet which gives you equally as much information.

You have to walk 170 steps up and down, there is no lift.

the castle is opened daily during except during Dece 24/25/31, Jan 1 and the 7th Tuesday to Easter.

Nice photos. I seem to miss this place every time I go to Germany. Your comment about never having seen Autumn colours made me think how easy it is to take things for granted.
