A meal at any of the many Viennese heuriger is a must; I particularly enjoyed eating there, tasting the local wine and sampling local delicacies.

You are seated on wooden chairs and wooden tables served by ladies in typical Viennese dresses. You may see men in lederhosen outfits!!!

Heuriger is a tradition that goes back to the Romans period.

"Heuriger" means this year's and here it is connected to wine-harvest of the year.
heuer = this year, in the Bavarian dialects.

Not all heuriger keeps open all the time, some open only for a couple of weeks a year, others fixed their dates say every
second month, and others specialize on weekends, e.g. Friday to Sunday.

You go to the counter to select your meal, either front a case or from a black board menu. The ladies would also show you possible warm food.

The picture shows many kinds of dips, cold cuts to accompany the local wine

We ate delciious schnitzel (pork and chicken are available and some places offer the original veal) but we had this Bohemian Schnitzel version which tasted like cured meat and some herbs which are flattened thinly and then crumbed and fried - with a squeeze of lemon it is indeed very tasty. To complement our dinner we had variations of salad, and our friend Melissa had very dense looking rye bread eaten with different spreads.

This picture is of the Buschen - it is a green bush of a pinetree placed outside the heuriger to say it is opened for business.

This is the common signal, used by everyone, to show that it is open. In Vienna it is called: "ausgsteckt is".
because of these bunches ("bunch" = "Busch") a heuriger can also be called a "Buschenschank".

The hotel recommended it, and then we saw it in a guidebook. I think the restaurant need no extra publicity!!!

It is a rather popular place to eat especially the ultra humungous Wiener Schnitzel.
They have several branches, we went to the one at Backerai Strasse, very close to the St Stephans Cathedral.

Here there is a good selection of drinks. I had some white wine, and also some campari mixed with local wine, and there is a good selection of soda - lemon or berry flavoured.

I odered the pork chop with potato salad accompaniment - euro 14 while Sharrie had a calf liver with roasti spuds euro 11, and after that both of us dived into desserts...she had cheese dumplings with poached apricot and I had hazelnut parfait...both very rich but awesome.

The total bill came up to45 euro.

Favorite Dish: quiant looking restauratn, lots of dark wood finishing with some black board menu, and a modern lamp shade above.

as the evening was rather warm, we sat by the windows with passerbys gazing into our dinner!!!

Located at upmarket Kohlmart Strret, the shop is across from the top international fashion labels such as Chanel, Gucci and Ferragamo. After busting your wallet - you should come here to put up the feet at least. Have a cuppa melange to wash down the many choice of tortes, strudels etc.

Plenty to take home as well, I bought 2 Demel Sacher torte which is said to be good for 2 weeks, but gets crumbly after 3-4 days once opened. The cakes are packed in a nice wooden box - mind you it is rather heavy to cart home, but it survived well in the luggage!!!

VTer mel_bee introduced me to this king of the Kaffee-Konditorei.

we even (for my sake) took a train ride to have this ice cream!!! I am such a freak for good ice cream and when I was told that Tichy is the best...I was hounding poor Oliver each day in and day out till he took me there.

I was all psyched up for my ice cream...after our dear friend Mel giving us such a good run up on the delightful ice cream ball. Liked I said - i do have an extra stomach for ice cream.

Here the most popular would be the ice coupe - la maison - house special which I saw herds ordering...and also what we ordered was the balls....studed balls called 'schneeballe '. They have 4 flavours and I picked up 2 flavours.. they are just vanilla ice cream studded with jam or jelly like fillings and the balls are coated. One I had had delicious apricot filling and the balls were coated with nuts, and another had berry filling and was coated with poppy seed. My friend had one coffee flavoured ball though.

Although it may rate as the best ice cream in Vienna - however nothing beats my San Crispino in Rome!!!
