I never knew much of Bari until I was getting there, and only realised that there was plenty of enthusiastic travellers there.
IMagine Italy as a boot shape - Bari is at the heel of the boot - a very south part of Italy. It is also a port a great access to the Adriatic sea, a gateway to Croatia and Greece - lots of ferry to take to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bari
Bari is an ancient town, may not have lots of modern looking building, but I quickly liked the town. The history goes back to tribal people, and was also colonised by Greek, Romans, Byzantines, Normans Swabians, the Aragons, Angevins, Roman Empire, then the Bourbons under Napoleon.
We got to Bari from a trip to Napoli - but the national train connected us via Caserta town (about 1/2 hour from Napoli). It is the same train travelling from Rome Termini train station, and picked us up at Caserta to our journey to Bari. Rome-Bari train ride is about 5 hours, and a standard rail trip cost around 38-39 euro each, and sometimes the Italian Eurostar is offered, otherwise the older trains on the IC is offered. The train station Bari Centralle is in the city centro with good connection to the local private train FSE which can connect you to some nice small towns on track 11 of the main station. I used FSE train to get myself to Alberobello to see the ancient trulli houses.
Our friends arrived Bari from Rome Fumicino airport, connecting from a MAS flight from Kuala Lumpur then on Alitalia (same alliance flight) and apparently the flight is about 1/2 hour. The airport is some 30-40 mins ride from the Bari centro.
Much of the city is walkable - from the train station to the famous church takes about 15 minutes stroll. there was lots of nice little roads - almost maze like, and quiant shops and nice delis to get into. Also the people at Bari are very approachable, and helpful.
For my future reference
In my trip to the Puglia (apulia) region, I had the opportunity to sample lots of local good... it amazes to me, the many types of pasta was available in Italy.... and the interesting preparation.
My top favourite would be their orecchette pasta - ear shaped pasta, cooked simple with some cloves of garlic, a little chilli, maybe a piece of salted sardine or anchovies for flavour, and tossed with lots of delicious local olive oil and plenty of young tender rape (rah-pee) vegetables = the top part of turnip. It was simple but was so delicious, it made me running to the local store to bring some dried pasta home. Other more complex version of the pasta we had was made with purreed beans - could be chickpeas or fave beans. We even tried the unbleached pasta.
Bread was also very delicious in the past of the world - ring shaped bread, and some with speck others with aniseed. All tasty. Apparently their wheat
growing dates back to the Roman times
Lots of delicious seafood as well - but I enjoyed so much the octopus throughout my stay in Italy.
