Sticky Fingers: Melt in your Mouth Roast Lamb
  • Tip Rating:

  • Christchurch Sticky Fingers
  • sumptuous finger lickin' racks
  • by Audrey118

  • Restaurant Name: Sticky Fingers

I read of Sticky Fingers from several popular reviews such as in Frommers but did not see it reviewed by any VT members.

Some said the name of the restaurant could be tied to a Rolling Stone album....but well...you sure get your fingers sticky in this bar - restaurant.

The first thing that caught my eye was the door handle - which is shaped like a golden spread out palm (our hand ok) and also the lamp shades than hangs on the dining boothtype seats. And very funny - I saw the same lights at the Art Centre in the Artisan section and I went back another day to the Art Centre - and he said he was commissioned to do that for the restaurant.

Otherwise the interior was very ordinary.

Favorite Dish: My favourite dish would be my main course - the roast rackof lamb with roasted garlic and potato and baby beetroot was really yummy. The sauce was also very delicious. My husband's salmon was not flash. We also shared an entree - a platter of seafood which had two of each - seared scallop, freshly shucked oyster and boiled scampi. to finish off we had a tiramisu,...very yummy.

with fruit juice the bill came up to NZ100 - pretty much as we expected.

the service was commandable. we asked for directions to the casino and the waitress was so kind to draw it out on the map and re-assured us it was safe to walk through the park.

Coyote: Tex Mex - along the Oxford Terrace
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Coyote

we stumbled to this place on our first day arriving to Christchurch. We were lost as the Oxford terrace meandered along the river and it breaks up somewhere and continues on. Tired from walking we need to put our feet up, and also very hungry from walking for about an hour, we spotted a row of outdoor dining along the Oxford Terrace...well at least for this part of the terrace. The terrace runs along the Avon River...

we could not decide which outlet to dine it - so picked the busy one....further down the end frin Coyote is Via Duct - also a highly recommended eatery.

Favorite Dish: Coyote serves mainly tex-mex type of food. we saw people with huge huge salads...huge bread with dips...everything was huge!!!

for lunch and we were terribly hungry, my husband ordered smoked fish cakes with side salad...around NZD12, and i had seafood chowder also about that price. with drinks the total bill was around 35 NZD.

the service was brisk and again the people was terribly friendly...all NZ people are terribly friendly

Dux de Lux: Have drink while at the Arts Centre
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Restaurant Name: Dux de Lux

It seems quite a must go place in Chch, well - at least most reviews including those at VT.

To be very frank i think it is over-rated - and I did not particularly liked the food. The beer my husband said made up for the not too great green curry.

we were at the Arts centre and wanted some light food so we decided we share out the Green Curry Seafood...i was just curious how good the NZ could duplicate Asian curries...it failed to the last straw. It was not thick and i suspect it was convenient paste...and it tasted more like a green coloured tom yam. well if the locals think this is green curry - sorry mate...you better take the next flight to Thailand.

The portion was large, and piping hot and the seafood was very very fresh. As a matter of fact the prawns was so so sweet. It was good if you are expecting a mild Tom Yam soup....

the food otherwise is mainly pizza and deli like salads...where you order on queue line. it was very popular with the locals - young and old and family type.

Pedro: Spanish food with NZ produce
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Christchurch - Paella in Christchurch
  • Paella in Christchurch
  • by Audrey118
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Restaurant Name: Pedro

While travelling in the place from Auckland to Christchurch I sat next to a man who was from US, grew up in Germany, works in Guangdong, and has a family in Chiristchurch!!! Anyway, he was very very nice - he spoke excellent Mandarin and highly recommend me to try out this Spanish restaurant...Pedro. It is located in an upstairs...along Worcester St, behind to the Cathedral....red building and most impt - it is closed on Sunday and Mondays (we attempted going there on a Monday)

Favorite Dish: The restauarant is as Spanish as it can be....Spanish blue and white crockery...even the dish for the Catalan Crema (almost like creme brulee) was served in the same flat and small brown dish as I ate in Barcelona.

Pedro has been serving guests for over 20 years....he was from Madrid and he really quite a nice man. He uses plenty of local product.... and is quite happy to come up with orders not in the menu.

We had Paella seafood....which is saffron rice served with lots of NZ mussels, fresh scampis, and prawns, and also squids.
While waiting for it we had a dish of white baits - really tiny white fish cooked in garlic and chillied olive oil - best eaten with fresh bread. You could also have garlic prawns. We saw others having a paera - which is a platter which lots of roast meat - such as tender lamb, goat, pork chop and beef with roast vegetables.

the crema catalan was so yummy...love the burnt sugar

    ebisu: Japanese snacks

  • Christchurch - very small plate of sushi
  • very small plate of sushi
  • by Audrey118

  • Restaurant Name: ebisu

quite a hip place...not a traditional Japanese eatery - the girl serving us was wearing a hipster and she was quite charming.

EBISU is a name of a district in Japan where they manufacture the Sapporo beer - Yebisu.

In this small home style restaurant there is sushi counter but no fish to be seen...the sushi chef also does the grilling stuff.
on the wall there is lots of concoction drinks

this place is unique - you order little plates of food to share. For 2 pax ideally order around 6 -7 plates and rice is extra charge.

Favorite Dish: we had sashimi - mixed plate - it was fresh but a little small serving...

my fav agadeshi tofu - which is slightly fried tofu - really yummy here. and also a plain udon becos it was a cold day...and the girl was so nice to turn up the heater for us. we also shared some tempura and grilled fish and also grilled lamb cutlets.

On a trip to Chch from the US two years ago I was introduced to Dux de Lux. Great place to enjoy a glass of ginger beer with friends. Wonderful food and great atmosphere. I highly recommend it!

I know this departure tax is so expensive, even more expensive than in Auckland! Wonderful memories we have of you and Seah.
