Jim Thompson's House: Jim Thompson House (please it...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jim Thompson House (please it is not the main shop in Surawong Road)
Old Thai Design Houses built in the 1950s and was legendary on its own.

Jim Thompson House was the home of James Thompson,
a self-made American entrepreneur who was the founder
the renowned Jim Thompson Thai Silk Company.
Jim Thompson lived in Thailand for more than 2 decades.
He contributed to the development of the Thai Silk industry, and Jim
Thompson was awarded the Order of the White Elephant, a decoration
bestowed upon foreigners for having rendered exceptional service to
    Thailand.
In 1967, Jim Thompson went on holiday with friends to the Cameron
Highlands in Malaysia. There he set out for a walk
    in the surrounding jungle
but never returned. Thus began the Jim Thompson legend.

The house, as original as it was, is of Thai design, and houses
many valuable antiques such as procelain, sculptures and artwork.
Admission fee is applicable, and it is a short guided tour where
everyone walks around the Thai 'houses' bare foot.

There is a small cafetaria and you can enjoy a cool drink and
some local delicacies (of course there is the regular European stuff
but do go for the Thai stuff...I thought they were tasty).

There is also a modest sized shop where you can take home some Thai made goodies, made under the Jim Thompson brand with uncomprisable quality. Their main shop however is at Surawong Road which has since been extended from the original building.

Chatuchak Weekend Market: Chatuchak Market, at Mo Chit...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Chatuchak Market, at Mo Chit skytrain station
Huge - very huge market for crafts, antiques, clothings (cheap t shirts), souveniers, and even antiques. The huge market is divided into sections based on what they sell. There is an office and they have map of the entire place....the place is divided to what they offer for sale. There are also lots of food stalls within the ground.

I was not keen to buy things where you need to bargain - but it is worth a trip at least once. I bought some craft things home, but many tourist have lots to say about it.
If you enjoy shopping with crowds, bargaining - you would like it...i rather keep myself happy in Isetan....

Directions: Mor Chit terminal - accessible by Sky train...rather faraway from the city - but worth once for experience.

  • Bang Pa In, the Summer Palace, dates to the 17th century when King Prasat Thong (1629-1656) constructed a palace on Bang Pa In Island in the Chao Phraya River.
There were wild reports from a Dutch merchant, Jeremias van Vilet was King Prasat Thong illigetimate son of King Ekathotsarot who in his youth was shipwrecked on that island and had son by a woman who he befriended. The boy became the Chief Minister and after having usurped the throne he became the King Prasat Thong.

The King founded the Wat Chumphon Nikayaram monastery on land owned by his mother. He then dug a pond and built a palace south of that monastery. Historical records record only the name of a single building, the Aisawan Thiphaya-art Royal Residence, constructed in 1632. It's not known how long the palace was in use, however, by 1807 the site was completely overgrown and neglected. The palace was revived by King Rama IV of the Chakri dysnasty.

  • The Royal Residence

  • The royal residence (Excellent and Shining Heavenly Abode) is a neo classic style mansion which was a favourite of King Chulalongkorn, built in 1877.

The original building was destroyed by fire in 1938 when the palace was under repairs. The new building was constructed in 1996.

T he private apartments of this building which are located in the Inner Palace are still used by the King whenever they reside at the Summer Palace. During our trip, the Primcess Alexandria from UK was on official visit and was expected to stay there for 5 nights.
