| | Ayutthaya was the capital of Thailand for 400 years during 1350 to mid 1760s until their worse enemy the Burmese tore it to the grounds....
It is less than 90 km to the north of Bangkok, you can visit it by the river, or by bus, coach etc.
Bus is from the Northern Bus Terminal, or boat by the river.
There are lots to see that one day I could not get to see it all. There are about 140 odd temples (wat) and I only saw three!!! Many of the wat has influence of Thai, Cambodian, Sri Lanka, Chinese etc....all within one ground!!!
When you get there, you will see lots of ruins, some has holes in them. The king then built these chedis and looted all his pricey stuff and also ashes of ancestors in this mounts of concrete...and they were meant to be excavated in times of needs. But now, you will see lots of holes in some of the structures, becos mankind robbed it, and there are many headless bodies there...also stolen by thieves, be it local or the Brumese attackers...apparetnly they chopped of the heads which had gold leaves lining over it, and instead of carting the massive amount of gold back 100 over km to Bruma...or whereever, they burnt the entire lot to melt down the gold making it easier for trasnportation!!! all these happend int he 1760s!!!!
such a shame that so much destruction is seen but no preservation as the government has stopped excavation, and instead only allow minor cleaning or the ruins. It is however a magnificent palce to spend a day to see the past glory of the Siam kingdom. |
