  • There are quite a number of temples worth visitng while in Penang Island.

There are two very interesting temples in the area of Pulau Tikus, along Lorong Burma there are two facing each other; one is the Thai Buddhist temple with the famous reclining Buddha, and the other a large one which is Burmese version.

The Thai temple ~ Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram
The Burmese ~ Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist temple

  • This area of Pulau Tikus (Rat Isle) was once in a Burmese village with lots of fisherman dwelling. But the only remains of their dwellings in Penang is this temple which apparently was founded during the early 1800s.

  • The stupa of this temple has been featured in many old paintings as early as 1805....

  • Mythical animals are seen around the gardens of the temple. Apparently there is an original Boddhi plant here

Burmese Temple (Dhammikarama): Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Burmese are devout Buddhists. History tells us of Burmese settling in Penang Island, many wear around the Pulau Tikus area. They came here as early as 1800s and appealed to Queen Victoria of England for land to build bigger temples and burial grounds for elders. Queen Victoria through the East India Company granted land jointly for the Siamese and Burmese communities to erect their temples.

This Burmese temple is the first Buddhist temple in Penang.

Reclining Buddha temple (Wat Chayamangkalaram): Visit Temple 2 ~ Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is just across from the Burmese temple....we are still in the area of Pulau Tikus.

You can see very ornate structures, and seems like more and more had been added - many are charity driven but lots of wealthy patrons support these temples.

If you are around the Thai songkran water festival during early April - it is quite fun to see it practised in Malaysia.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The Thai styled temple has all that glitters....

Here shows two fearsome statues of warriors guarding outside the temple.
Around the temple ground there are two shrines to Lord Brahma: Buddhism and Hinduism.

Hi Audrey, The place is called Teow Chew Meng. Serves excellent mee suah tow (your mock sharksfin?). Pricing is a little bit high side (RM10 per bowl for 1 person) Business must be good as this guy has expanded t o Pulau Tikus and Bayan Baru
