Off The Beaten Path: See, smell and taste: Borough Market

  • I don't know if it is a really Off The Beaten Path as the crowd bustling around the shops.
But many locals recommend me to visit this place, it was worth the trip.

At the origins, it was a wholesale fruit and vegetable market. More recently a weekly
fine food retail market has been established with a number of shops specialising in
food retailing. What is nice, is that you could taste some product as cheese in a friendly athmospehreand discuss directly with the producer. I am still remembered about this tasteful fondant au chocolat (not Swiss made for this time;-) which feed me quickly as I was not enough patient to queue for a local sausage sandwich... do not miss also the butchery with boar's heads wearing funny caps....

So much to see, smell and taste there!

Off The Beaten Path: A must do and taste... Pub Crawl

  • London - Make your choice...

  • Anyway try to stay On The Beaten Path after your Pub Crawl :-)

I have learned this local activity when I was an English student during my first London stay. A pleasant way to discover the pubs and their own atmospheres. Beer amateur will be reward by tasting several different beers and real ales, beside you could also appreciate the stylish decoration and some cultural discussions by meeting the local fauna...

How to explain the popularity of beer in Londoner Pubs? Population growth and industrial processes had led to pollution of rivers and wells. In medieval London, beer was safer to drink than water and was seen as a wholesome, healthy drink (of course with moderation). Boiling the water in the brewing process and its alcoholic content, had a sterilising effect. Nowadays (hopefully) you could still perpetuate this tradition, especially as sometimes ordering a pint of spring water will cost you more than beer ;-)

This website offers a nice system to generate a pub crawl in specific area in London. Cheers!

NB: uncensored pics are coming soon...

Off The Beaten Path: Real Ale Secrets...
  • Tip Rating:
  • London - The Ram Brewery at Wandsworth
  • The Ram Brewery at Wandsworth

  • Want to discover the Real Ale Secrets?

So head for a traditionnal local brewery tour. I have choosen the Ram Brewery at Wandsworth and its Young's beers as Waggle Dance and Winter Warmer. The brewery tour was fine and the final beer tasting choise great among 7 local brewed specialities.

Brewing began on the Ram site in Wandsworth in 1581, making it the oldest site in the UK where beer has been continuously produced. Young's bought the site when it was founded in 1851, but had been considering its future of the site for the past two-and-a-half years.

    Historic brewery closed in merger...

But hurry up if you want to take part of this tasteful brewery tour included the surprising stables, the last ever will be on September 30th 2006. In fact, brewer and pubs group Young's is to end 400 years of history with the sale of one of the UK's oldest brewing sites. The group is selling its Ram Brewery in Wandsworth, south London, and merge its brewing operations with Charles Wells. The move will lead to at least 90 job losses, and leaves Fullers as the last remaining large-scale brewer in the capital. Under the takeover deal, Young's is moving its brewing operations to Wells' more modern brewery in Bedfordshire :-(
