Temple de la Sagrada Familia: The perpetual building cathedral...

  • Still under construction since 1882... Sagrada Família is the most famous work of Gaudí, to which it devoted all its life.

As works are stil in progerss, some areas cannot be visited for reasons of safety. You could visit: the frontage of the Nativity, the frontage of Passion and an elevator takes you up to an height of 70 meters. To go up higher it is necessary to follow on foot. From there you could have a bird's eye view on the masterwork. Inside the church visit the central nave, the transept and sectors of the cloisters and underground visit the crypt and the museum.

If work continues at the same rate/rhythm, the church could be finished in 20-25 years.

Tibidabo: The Blue Tram becomes Red?

  • What a surpise when I saw the Blue Tram (Tramvia Blau) was in fact Red ;-). Fortunately the other tram is blue. Nevermind the color as I was happy to do this ride avoiding me to walk a steep hill up to Tibidabo.

Operating since 1901, the Tramvia Blau will offer a picturesque way of reaching the Tibidabo. In a residential area, this old fashioned tramway runs through the leafy setting of the mountainside, before ending at the foot of the funicular railway. It covers a route of 1,276m, reaching an altitude of 93m.

Another interesting historical fact: I learn that Gaudi was knocked down by this tram and died three day later in 1926.

Fare (TMB pass no valid on this tram)
    Single ticket EUR 2,20
    Return ticket EUR 3,30
Ticket is sale on board of the tramway or at the tram stop.

  • The Tibidabo funicular railway was inaugurated on 29 October 1901 and became the first funicular railway in Spain.

The funicular operates on a line 1152 metres long with grades of up to 25.7% and a vertical ascent of 278.3 metres. The funicular railway was originally only a single track, with a passing siding halfway up. In 1922, in anticipation of the forthcoming Barcelona Universal Exhibition of 1929, the number of railcars was doubled. The installations were entirely remodelled between 1958 and 1960 to meet the gradual increase in demand. However, service was reduced as from 1995, owing to the financial problems of the owners, PATSA.

Transport by cable car from the stop for the Blue Tram at the pl. Dr Andreu to the . The Tibidabo funicular railway currently covers the route between Plaça del Doctor Andreu (at the end of Avinguda del Tibidabo) and Plaça del Tibidabo (Tibidabo Amusement Park), and links with the Tramvia Blau. The route, which took 9 minutes to cover in 1901, is now covered in 6 minutes.

    Schedule:
In January, February, April, October, November and December, the funicular railway will operate only when the amusement park is open. The rest of the year, the funicular railway will operate on specific days, even when the amusement park is closed.

    Frequency: Every 30 minutes.

    Fare:
Ticket: one way or return: 2,00 euros / round trip: 3,00 euros
Pensioners: one way or return; 1,50 euros / round trip: 2,00 euros
School groups: one way or return: 1,50 euros / round trip: 2,00 euros

    Observations:
Bicycles can be taken aboard the Tibidabo funicular at any time.

Tibidabo: Sagrat Cor: excellent view point

  • From the Sagrat Cor (Sacred Heart Church) at Tibidabo you will get a wonderful panorama on Barcelona and its surroundings.

The Tibidabo area situated half up on a mountain in the north part of Barcelona (548 m above sea level), is a popular attraction with an amusement park built in 1899 and several museums.

The church is an enormous temple which can be seen from almost anywhere in Barcelona. Even if it looks like a gothic cathedral it is not. It is only 40 years old. The building was started in 1902 by Enric Sagnier and the work was not finished until 1961. Actually it is two churches one on top of the other.

To go there you have to take the Tibidabo funicular which in it self is a museum being the oldest of its kind in Spain.

    Plaça d'Espanya: Plaça d'Espanya

  • The Plaça d'Espanya was urbanised in 1929, the year of the Universal Exhibition held in Barcelona.

The imposing fountain in the centre, with its three bronze sculptures representing trade, industry and shipping, are by Josep Maria Jujol, a versatile artist and invaluable associate of Gaudí's.

The two Venetian towers, which flank the Avenida Maria Cristina, mark the entrance of the trade-fair site which is overlooked by the majestic Palau Nacional, home to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). You can get to the museum easily on foot using the convenient escalators. From there you will enjoy an extraordinary view of the whole city from many spots on the mountain.

Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC): The world's finest collection of Romanesque art

  • The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya is one of the most important museums in Catalonia. The MNAC is a must-see and brings together one of the most important museum collections of Romanesque art in the world. The museum also has outstanding collections of Gothic, Renaissance and baroque art. As if that wasn't enough, there is always an extremely interesting temporary exhibition to see. From the Palau Nacional building, which is the museum's headquarters, built for the 1929 International Exhibition, you can enjoy one of the most glorious views of the city, with the trade fair precinct and the Magic Fountain in the foreground, which offers a night-time sound and light show.

Olympic Circle: The main site of the 1992 Olympic Games

  • The Olympic Ring on Montjuïc was the nerve centre of the 1992 Games and the most important of the city's four Olympic sites. It provided the setting for some of the most thrilling moments of that magic summer, when Barcelona became the world capital of sport and co-existence. The Ring showcases the refurbished Stadium, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games and the athletics competitions; the Palau Sant Jordi, a marvel of design and technology by the Japanese architect Isozaki; the imposing white structure of the communications tower; the headquarters of the INEFC or Sports University, and the Picornell swimming pools. If you fancy a swim, go ahead. They're open to the public.

    Cathedral La Seu: The Cathedral

  • Built mainly during the 14th century, it contains three naves and a transept, and side chapels between the buttresses. It also houses a crypt dedicated to Santa Eulàlia. The cloister, built between 1350 and 1448, can be entered from the outside through the Pietat gateway. The Cathedral's façade was originally designed at the end of the 19th century, following the lines of the 1408 Romanesque & gothic model.

Tours: Enjoy the Port by sea...

  • The final stretch of La Rambla reaches the sea in a happy encounter with the waters of the Mediterranean. A ride in the lift to the top of the Mirador de Colom is one of them, as its circular viewing gallery affords breathtaking views of the entire city. You could also visit to the Museu Marítim, housed in the splendid Gothic building of the Royal Shipyards, where you can see a life-size replica of John of Austria's flagship used at the Battle of Lepanto. Moreover, taking a pleasure-boat ride on the "Golondrinas" or the modern Catamaran Orsom, is an experience which is as appealing as it is relaxing.

Parc Guell: Gaudí's architecture in garden form

  • This park, a Worid Heritage Site, is named after Gaudí's great patron, Count Eusebi Güell. Although initially planned as a residencial garden city in the English style (hence the name "Park"), the initiative was unsuccessful and only one showhouse was built, like the one which was Gaudí's home and today houses the museum devoted to the architect. Finally, Güell donated the park to the Municipal Council in 1923 and since then it has belonged to the municipality and been a unique public park enjoying a prime location. Nowhere else so successfully integrates Gaudí's work into nature: his main source of inspiration.
