As European I was not aware about the potential sun dangers, but once in Australia I quickly learnt by locals the sunny risks and how to prevent sunburn...
Fortunately these last years in Switzerland massive information and prevention messages have been widely spread. Also valid for the Alps in Winter... Please save your skin!!!
Official sun protection tips that I still apply.
The Cancer Council Australia’s key recommendations to minimise the risk of skin cancer:
- Seek shade and reduce your sunlight exposure, especially during the peak radiation hours between 10am – 2pm (11am - 3pm during daylight saving). - Cover up, even when temperatures are in the low 20’s. - Choose loose lightweight clothing that covers your arms, legs and neck. - Wear a hat with a broad brim, at least 8-10cm. - Apply broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outside. Reapply every 2 hours, or more often if swimming or perspiring. - Wear sunglasses that meet the Australian Standard (AS 1067) to block UV and protect your eyes against cataracts.

Shark attacks coming soon... Hopefully this one was prevented by the underwater tunnel at the Sydney Aquarium Darling Harbour ;-) I always feel safe in the Australian water when swimming or diving especially if there were shark net and an patrol surveillance helicopter. Just kidding again. Now the official part to prevent any shark problems...
Shark attacks occur rarely. Only a few of the 450 or so shark species have been known to attack people. Unfortunately, some attacks are fatal.
There are some easy and commonsense precautions to take that can help reduce the risk of a shark attack. This risk minimisation advice is reproduced from the Australian Shark Attack File.
1. Do not swim, dive or surf where dangerous sharks are known to congregate. For instance as I experimented on Fraser Island beaches... 2. Always swim, dive or surf with other people. 3. Do not swim in dirty or turbid water. 4. Avoid swimming well offshore, near deep channels, at river mouths or along drop-offs to deeper water. 5. If schooling fish start to behave erratically or congregate in large numbers, leave the water. 6. Do not swim with pets and domestic animals. 7. Look carefully before jumping into the water from a boat or wharf. 8. If possible do not swim a dusk or at night. 9. Do not swim near people fishing or spear fishing. 10. If a shark is sighted in the area leave the water as quickly and calmly as possible.
Encouraging, have a safe swimming...

My fake 'arrest' in the Sydney Olympic park during the summer Games 2000. Certainly due to the fact I was yodling SWISS, SWISS, SWISS, GO, GO, GO... and wearing a white and red flag instead of green and yellow one;-) Just kidding it was the most fairplay athmosphere that I ever experience in sports!!!
Afterward I do not know why the two police officers insist to take a picture with me in front of Stadium Australia (you could guess it in the background...)

Do not forget to drink with MODERATION... even if the aussie beers are very tempted.
Each Australian state have its own proud: Tooheys (NSW), my favorite by the way XXXX (QLD), my favorite too by the way Cascade (TAS), my favorite too too by the way VB (VIC), my favorite too too too by the way Coopers (SA), my favorite too too too too by the way Emu (WA), my favorite too too too too too by the way ??? (NT), ouf I'm saved I did not taste the local beer as I never go there (yet)... should come back soon ;-)
TIP: Drink plenty if water (if still enough room to drink something;-) before to go sleep to reduce the risks of hangover.
