Tijuana Mexico

Viva Mexico

Gateway to Revolution
Tijuana is the gateway for most American tourists.

Avenue Revolution is busy the center point throughout the day with seniors, parents and couples shopping for the Mexican blankets potery and trinkets. As the sun sets and the day progresses, the drinks start to flow, the Ave turns into a drunken dabachery filled town of teenagers drinking to excessive amounts.

Viva Mexico!

I first moved to Tijuana in the summer of 1989. I was only 19 years old and in love with a country and it's people. I lived over the border and commuted back and forth to the US daily, learning many things and growing to really love a city of dust, dirt and pollution.

There are many things’ that you never ever see, that make a city like Tijuana special.

History of TJ

Going back to the 1830's the land Tijuana is located on was part of a large cattle ranch known as Rancho de Tia Juana (rough translation: Aunt Juana's Ranch).

By the 1890s the area's climate had attracted many settlers who began shortening the areas name to Tijuana. Tijuana though small, was a rowdy border town competing for Californian's gambling and drinking dollars. The Mexican Revolution of 1911 barely effected the residents of Tijuana and as soon as the war was over Tijuana's Nightlife was back on track. Tijuana became a city in 1917, also in 1917 San Diego, Tijuana's neighbor to the north banned cabaret dancing and nightclubs. This only added to the growing numbers of Americans that came to party in Tijuana.

In 1921 Prohibition was made law in the United States and the number of Americans going to Tijuana to enjoy the nightlife rose tremendously. Tijuana boomed as a major playground and Tijuana Businessmen were smart and built a race track, a grand casino, numerous bars, nightclubs and brothels to entertain their money spending neighbors to the north. Those were the days when ordinary tourists could rub elbows with Movie Stars and Gangsters in one of the many bars along Avienda Revolucion, Gamble on boxing matches, cock fights, bull fights and horse races or sample the ladies in the brothels in Tijuana's Zona Norte all the while drinking all the tequila and cervezas they wanted. Tijuana, dependent on the tourist dollar slowed down during the depression and the City's economy collapsed when President Cardenas outlawed Gambling in 1935.

Tijuana limped along until World War II and the return of legal gambling and once again tourists poured into Tijuana for all the fun now accompanied by countless Sailors and Marines. Tijuana has sustained steady growth since W.W.ll and is now Mexico's fourth largest city

I used to spend summers in Tijuana with my family who lives there. WHile it is easy to get drugs in the pharmacies, it is illegal to take them accross the border w/o a script. You can go to jail

Enjoying reading your tips on Tijuana. Bring back fond memories. It is so different from San Diego just across the border.
