  • In 1942 U.S. General Douglas MacArthur and the Headquarters Allied Forces South West Pacific Area was forced to reloate to Brisbane Australia.

The museum not only focuses on Macarthur, but provides the historical awareness to visitors about the community, the youth, and the country as a whole during those crisis years from 1942–1944. It also depicts the successful allied coalition of Australians and Americans who served together.

I loved the visit as the museum curator went out of her way to assist and answer questions. Most interesting to me was how the influx of 200,000 US service member affected the city of Brisbane. I think that this is a must visit for any resident of brisbane and great historical stop for Americans.

They are open from 10am to 3 pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. If you are a teacher or would like to coordinate a special opening, they will arrange.

    Admission is
    $5 for Adults
    $2.50 for concessions/children
    $12 for a family

Things To Do: QUEENSLAND MARITIME MUSEUM
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • I like maritime museums; however this one almost hit the tourist trap list for me. As you first enter the Museum, they have several models of sailing ships and descriptions of past voyagers. They have little on hands or interactive attractions, so I was almost falling asleep. However, once you make you way to the back of the museum it picks up a bit. And as a grand finally, you get to take an adventure aboard the frigate HMAS Diamantina.

In fact, the ship was the best part of the visit. They allow you to crawl around and visit the galley, medical, bridge and engine rooms. I think there wasn't much you couldn't see. This made the museum worth the visit and a good place to visit with kid’s age 8 yrs and up! There is also tour of the drydock available, but I passed.

Museum is strictly ran by volunteers so you patronage is appreciated.

    Admission Tickets
    adults $7
    children $3.50
family $16 (includes 2 adults and up to 3 children under 15)
pensioners, seniors and students with card $6

Dry Dock Tour Tickets (in addition to admission ticket)
    adults $4
    children $2
family $10 (includes 2 adults and up to 3 children under 15 years)
    concession $3

It is open every day of the year, except 24 December to 26 December and Good Friday, from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm (last entry 3.30 pm). Reduced opening hours occur on Anzac Day.

  • If you want to see the city and get a little exercise also, I recommend you rent a bicycle and discover the many paths and trails Brisbane has to offer.

Located at The City Botanic Gardens, they offer pretty much every kind of bike and all of the safety equipment you may need. Helmets, baby seats, bikes for 1 or 2 people. Call to reserve a bike or just show up. It made seeing the Botanical Gardens and the South bank lots of fun.

Open 7 days a week 9.30am till dark.

City Botanic Gardens Scale of Charges
    Adult Hire, 1 hour @ $15 then $5 each hour to a maximum $35.
2 days $50, all week $100, subsequent on going rate of $10 per day.
Children on Adult Cycles less 20% of adult rate.
Children on children's cycles less 50% of adult rate.

Treasury Casino: Play the slots or Blackjack!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Brisbane's Treasury Casino is located at the end of Queen Street Mall. If you like to play cards or have the urge to hit the slot machines; the Treasury is for you.

I have been to a few casinos around the world and this one is "OK". The slot machines very from 1 penny to 1 dollar and they can eat up the money fast. So, beware to the novice.

Being the only Casino in the area, I felt that there were little promotions offered. Maybe I am a bit spoiled having gone to Las Vegas, however the Casino had a couple of nice dining areas as well as a buffet that seemed overwhelmingly busy. Later in the evening they have a band that keeps us tourists entertained as they empty your wallet at the BLACKJACK tables. Hotel rooms were nice according to one of my friends that stayed there, but a bit overpriced.

    Travel2writes Tips for success:
    1. If you win, leave with your winnings!
    2. Set a limit you feel is reasonable to spend, and stick to it!
    3. Set a departure time and stick to it!
    4. Don't drink so much you don't care if you win or loose.
    5. Hit the buffet early, so at least your won't be hungry after you have spent all that money.

    Overall
If you have never been to a Casino before, come and check it out. If you’re a frequent Casino patron, you may be disappointed.

ChinaTown: Great place to shop for ????????
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Brisbane's Chinatown Mall on Duncan Street is the hub of Asian commercial activity. The streets entrance is guarded by pairs of stone lions, presented as a gift from the People's Republic of China. The 320kg stone carvings stand as a symbol of friendship and cultural respect. They also function as sentinels - protectors whose mere presence is said to guard against evil spirits. Sadly the stone carving don't keep out the wandering homeless and street beggers.

Shops and markets: I really didn't find much of interest here. Mainly, the shoppers here were people looking for the traditional Chinese supermarkets, which also stock Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Korean and Japanese products.

They did have some stores selling traditional oriental garments and traditional Asian jewelry but hardly at discount prices. If you have never been to any Asian country before this may fascinate your mind, however it seemed like just another Asian food market to me.

Various food vendors to explore if you go here, however not a must place to visit.
