  • Where the Balcony of Europe is now, there once was a 9th century castle. This has all vanished, because the allied destroyed the castle so that the French could not use it during that war of Independence. In 1487 the historical town center of Nerja was built in the surroundings of this viewing point, which sticks out from the cliffs and harbours a restaurant at this moment.
When the weather is ideal and your eyes are like the ones of a hawk, you can see North Africa at a very clear day from this point.

Things To Do: Las cuevas de Nerja
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The caves of Nerja are probably its most famous attraction and a few kilometers away from the town center. In the mountains surrounding Nerja, these caves have developped in the past millions of years.
A visit to all the Halls that are open to the public will take around 45 minutes. That's about the time you need to walk between the stalactites and stalacmites of these karstic cavaties.
Only one third of the total cave system is open for touristic visits. The total volume of the Caves of Nerja is however much larger: 264,379.33 m3.
Some 25,000 years ago the caves were even inhabited...

Things To Do: Beaches and cliff strolls
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Nerja has many beaches. Some with sand, some with pebbles, small ones, bigger ones. Beaches with beds or with comfortable rocks...
There are many because the coast of Nerja is formed by cliffs. A mysterious little path runs at the bottom of these (from town center to Burriana beach) and will lead you past a few of the stretches of sand that have formed between the stone walls. They are very cosy and offer some privacy in the off-season. (Also check out the dozens of stray cats that lie purring in the shades.)
The bigger beach and my stationary sun-bathing spot was Playa Burriana. Many shops and restaurants and also a scuba diving school have gathered here for your convenience.
Some beach names: Burriana, El Salon, Calahonda, El Chucho, El Chorillo, La Torrecilla, Carabeo, El Playazo, La Caletilla, Carabeillo.

  • This 14th century aqueduct was constructed to be a passageway for the water that was needed in the mills of the old sugar factory San Joaquín de Maro. You will pass it by when you're driving on the road from Nerja to Almeria, just outside of town on your left side. It's beautifully intact and has 38 arches on 4 storeys.
