Stranded at the end of the world A winter day in 1432 eleven men, fatigued and starved after fighting for their lives for weeks, but still alive, were found stranded on the uninhabited island Sandøya near Røst. These men proved to be the only survivers from three merchant ships belonging to the venetian merchant Pietro Querini, who were sailing from Crete to Flandern when the terrible storm off the coast of France ended their voyage and caused the tragedy for the 68 men aboard. The Italians stayed at Røst for three months, and their description of the meeting with the inhabitants of Røst is interesting reading and is a valuable document of life in the medieval era. There are still strong bonds between Røst and Italy. The stockfish export to Italy is essential for the local economy and the contact between the people of Røst and their friendship community of Sandrigo is very active. |
