A couple of facts about this well-knowned monument:

The coliseum is simply the world's biggest Amphitheatre, inaugurated in 80 A.D.
It was raised during the reign of the flavian emperors Vespasian, Titus and Domitian, and was originally named The Flavian Theatre. The exterior measures are impressingly 190x155 metres, there are 80 gates and 50.000 spectators could be seated there.

I had a closer encounter with the Coliseum as a young girl with the tourist group. During my late return to Rome I made different choices and decided to approach to the monuments in another way. The feeling and privelege of being close, being there, more than standing in a line for tickets, being able to walk around at my own pace - just breathing the atmosphere of times melting together, sensing the grandeur of history and imagining how it must have been in ancient times.
