I arrived at night. It was cool and damp. The airport reminded me of the one in the movie about the Entebe hostage crisis in the 70's..dark, soldiers with machine guns, spotlights. I expected Idi Amin to appear. As I walked down the steps of the plane I began to wonder just what I had gotten myself into. Ethiopia was not a place that people visited.
I crossed the tarmac and entered a low plain building. What greeted me was not Idi but the most fascinating of faces...Ethiopia in all her beauty. The large eyes and long nose. This face that is so connected with this region smiled and welcomed me to his country. From that moment on I fell in love with a land that has struggled with such poverty, famine, Marxist-Lenninst ideals that don't work, yet still retains a dignity in her people.
